UK Budget 2026: reaction

Reacting to the publication of the Government’s Autumn budget, Aldersgate Group Executive Director, Rachel Solomon Williams, said: “We welcome the Budget’s measures to ease energy costs for households and businesses, and the government’s restated commitment to net zero emissions by 2050. However, the UK’s long-term economic and physical security depends on greater climate stability and the restoration of our natural environment. Today’s announcements did not adequately reflect the scale of this challenge or the economic opportunities of addressing it.

“Removing the costs of the hydrogen levy from electricity bills is a positive step. We urge the government to go further in next year’s Spending Review by moving all policy costs from electricity bills to general taxation, helping to make electrification more affordable and competitive. We also call on the government to maintain stability across electrification policy, ensuring that the reduction in future Boiler Upgrade Scheme budgets does not dampen investor confidence in the vital heat pump market, which is vital to decarbonising homes and reducing longer-term energy costs.”
