The Business Case for a National Water Framework

The Aldersgate Group, working with businesses from across the economy and in discussion with sector experts, has examined these systemic water issues deeply. Our goal was to understand how good quality, widely available water can be at the heart of economic growth, public health and a flourishing environment, rather than being seen as a risk and a barrier. At the heart of our proposals is the empowerment of places and regions through greater clarity of strategy and regulation.

We call for a new National Water Strategy, to be delivered through new Regional Water Authorities within a much tidier and clearer regulatory framework. The private sector should be brought in through more clearly delineated responsibilities – this will create both fairness and an incentive to invest.

If the water system fails, our livelihoods, economy and nature are at risk. Spending time and resources now to get this National Water Framework right is necessary and will reap a lifetime of benefits.
