Response to ESNZ Committee inquiry into Business and Energy

Aldersgate Group prepared a response to the Energy Security and Net Zero (ESNZ) Committee’s inquiry into Business and Energy. The inquiry explored the potential for UK industry to electrify by 2030 and 2050, whether electrification would contribute to economic growth, and what the updated Industrial Decarbonisation Strategy should include. It also considered how government can help SMEs decarbonise, including by working with banks and financial services.

Electrification is one of the most cost-effective routes to decarbonising UK industry and a precondition for a competitive, reindustrialised economy. However, high electricity prices relative to gas, difficult grid access and poorly sequenced infrastructure are holding back investment.
