Aldersgate Group representation to Autumn Budget 2026

The Aldersgate Group has submitted a representation to HM Treasury’s Autumn Budget 2026. Building on last year’s submission, and recognising the challenging fiscal context, it focuses on what we see as the single most powerful lever available to the Chancellor: the price of electricity.

We make two linked recommendations. First, government should move social and environmental levies off electricity bills and into general taxation, with a roadmap to remove them from bills entirely by 2030. Second, government should commit to a targeted electrification discount scheme to close the running cost gap between electricity and gas for heavy industry and manufacturing, alongside tailored support for road freight.
