Aims

The Aldersgate Group is a politically impartial, multi-stakeholder alliance championing a prosperous, net zero emissions, environmentally sustainable economy.

Our members include some of the largest businesses in the UK with a collective global turnover of over £550bn, as well as leading NGOs, professional institutes and academic institutions.

Our mission is to trigger the change in policy required to address environmental challenges effectively, affordably and in a way that can maximise economic and job creation benefits across the UK. Through careful evidence gathering, policy development and targeted engagement with policy makers, our work demonstrates the clear business case for decarbonising the UK economy, improving resource efficiency and investing in the natural environment. We aim to put forward practical policy solutions to deliver this investment on the ground.

We call on the government to:

• Set a high level of ambition in climate policy, resource efficiency and environmental protection and restoration.
• Deliver on this ambition with clear, coherent, forward-looking and well-supported legislation that can tackle the UK’s climate and environmental challenges, while setting an example of international best practice.
• Provide the policy stability needed to unlock affordable business investment in the green infrastructure, products and services required to achieve the UK’s targets on net zero emissions, climate adaptation, resource efficiency and nature restoration.
• Develop a comprehensive strategy on skills development to ensure that the current and future workforce have the skills they need to benefit from the investment and job creation associated with the UK’s net zero emissions target and other environmental goals.

Our expert Secretariat manages the policy output and administrative management of the Aldersgate Group, which is overseen by its board of directors and senior leadership team.

What we do

We develop independent policy solutions based on targeted research, sound evidence and the extensive expertise of our members. Through our diverse membership, we advocate for policy change that delivers positive environmental development and economic benefits across the UK. The Group is focused on ensuring that the UK’s climate and environmental targets translate into measures that are environmentally effective and that grow affordable investment in low carbon infrastructure, products and services. A key objective for the Group is to ensure that climate and environmental policy can result in positive impacts in terms of supply chain growth, significant job creation and investment in skills across the country.

Using our unique position and real-life business case study insights from our cross-sectoral membership, we engage with key decision makers, respond to important consultations and inquiries, develop major policy reports and briefings, and hold high-level debates to present coherent solutions to important and complex policy challenges.

Leading by example

The Aldersgate Group Secretariat itself has set a net zero science-based target which is in line with a pathway to limit warming to 1.5°C. We have committed to reduce our scope 1 & 2 emissions by 42% and our scope 3 emissions by 46.2% by 2030, against a baseline of emissions from 2019–2020. In our baseline year, total emissions across scopes 1, 2 and 3 came to 2.22 tonnes CO₂e. You can read more on our environmental reporting page.

Additionally, the Aldersgate Group is proud to be a Climate Perks accredited employer. This means that we will give employees up to four days paid travel time a year if they elect to travel to their holiday destinations via land or sea rather than via air.

We are also members of Cyclescheme, encouraging our staff to travel to the workplace in an environmentally friendly way.

The Aldersgate Group is an official Accelerator to the Race to Zero campaign, a UN-backed global campaign to rally leadership and support from businesses, cities, regions and investors for a healthy, resilient, zero carbon recovery that prevents future threats, creates decent jobs and unlocks inclusive, sustainable growth.
