Synopsis

With the government having clearly stated its mission for the UK economy, including achieving economic growth and delivering clean power by 2030, it is vital that the protection and restoration of our natural environment is recognised and prioritised, given its importance for future prosperity. As several reforms are underway, from planning and energy to agricultural and water reform, businesses are weighing up how to engage and contribute towards a nature-positive economy in a competitive global environment.

Successive UK governments have recognised the crisis facing nature, putting legislation and legally binding targets in place to improve the quality of the UK’s natural environment. However, delivery has been insufficient, and the recent progress report from the Office for Environmental Protection found that the UK remains largely off track to meet its environmental ambitions. The current government is drafting its new approach to the Environmental Improvement Plan (EIP) and consulting on the Land Use Framework; alongside competing objectives across energy and housing development, and the approaching 30×30 nature goal, it is clear that the private sector will be key to delivering on these priorities. If designed in the right way, the government has the opportunity to achieve its critical missions to grow the economy and safeguard the environment. However, this will require the right policy mechanisms, regulations and targeted support to unlock action at scale.

The Aldersgate Group report, ‘Why nature matters for business’, offers insights from private sector and civil society experts to identify key growth opportunities for UK plc. It highlights challenges and opportunities for policymakers and suggests ways to maximise benefits for the UK. As the government ramps up its growth initiatives, this discussion will outline critical policy required to reestablish the UK as a leader in halting and reversing nature loss.
