The government is sabotaging British attempts to forge a green economy

Labour MP Luciana Berger writes that by delaying the green investment bank and cutting grants, the Government is stopping innovative companies from growing. The Aldersgate Group suggests that "the UK is losing momentum in the green economy race and there is only a small window of opportunity to assert leadership in the years ahead."

Green economy needs 2% of every nation's income, says UN

A report by the United Nations has found that a global green investment drive would pay off in terms of jobs, cleaner air and energy use. Peter Young, Chairman of the Aldersgate Group, urged the Chancellor George Osborne to include measures to stimulate low-carbon development in his March Budget.

Green Economy Council meets for first time

Peter Young, Chairman of the Aldersgate Group is among the leading business figures invited to sit on the Green Economy Council, which advises Government on the transition to a low carbon economy. The first meeting was chaired by Vince Cable, Secretary of State for BIS, who said "I’m delighted that we have attracted top business leaders from key sectors to join us on the Green Economy Council and help us develop these policies."

The Aldersgate Group campaigns for tougher regulation on businesses' reporting of their greenhouse gas emissions, particularly arguing that environmental data must be comparable. "Directors continue to retain considerable discretion over how to calculate and present this information," the Aldersgate Group says. "Climate change is too urgent and too important to be left to the ‘discretion’ of directors."
